Title: Human traces in remote Oceania revealed by sedimentary biomarkers

Description
The archipelago of Vanuatu is a key area for the recent human colonization of the Pacific, which came along with major landscape modifications. Lake and swamp sediment cores from the islands of Efate and Espiritu Santo, two islands with different degree of archeological knowledge, were analyzed with multiple proxies to provide paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions over the last 5000 years. Distinct human traces in this region are found in sedimentary biomarkers such as fecal sterols and palmitone, a unique biomarker for taro the main staple crop in the area.
